Born into obscurity – the details of his parentage and early life remaining frustratingly unknown – Shackleton rose to become Principal Painter in Ordinary to both George II and George III, a testament to his skill and the esteem in which he was held by the royal court. His career unfolded during a period of burgeoning artistic consciousness in Britain, as the nation sought to establish its own distinct visual identity, moving away from continental influences and fostering a uniquely British aesthetic.
