The Shadow

The painting The Shadow by Mary Gillies is a beautiful example of contemporary art, showcasing the artist's unique style and mastery of color. Created in 2007, this oil on canvas piece measures 22 x 39 cm and depicts a serene atmosphere of nighttime in the woods.

Composition and Technique

The scene is set against a backdrop of trees with a house visible in the distance, adding an element of human habitation to the otherwise natural setting. The presence of two dogs, one being walked by a man and another following closely behind him, showcases the bond between humans and their pets as they enjoy the outdoors together. The use of oil on canvas allows for a rich and vibrant color palette, with the moon illuminating the scene and creating a sense of tranquility.

Artistic Style and Influences

Mary Gillies' style is reminiscent of other notable artists, such as Vincent Van Gogh, who also explored the beauty of natural landscapes in their work. For example, Van Gogh's Outskirts of Paris 2 (available on WikiOO.org) showcases a similar attention to detail and use of color. Similarly, the work of John Singer Sargent, such as his painting Hercules (available on WikiOO.org), demonstrates a mastery of technique and composition.
