Born in Borås, Sweden, Hall’s journey was one of remarkable transformation, transcending his Scandinavian origins to become a defining figure within the glittering courts of France. His early life was marked by an academic pursuit of medicine and natural history at Uppsala University, where he studied under the legendary Carl Linnaeus. However, the call of the visual arts proved far more resonant than the study of science. By 1766, Hall had established himself in Paris, a move that set the stage for an extraordinary ascent. This achievement paved the way for his appointment as a court painter, Peintre du Roi et des Enfants de France, where he had the distinct honor of painting the portraits of the Dauphin of France—the future Louis XVI—as well as his brothers, Louis XVIII and Charles X.
