A Life of Spirit and Color

Adriaan Johan Korteweg arrived in the world in Wormerveer on 21 September 1890. The son of a physician, he initially pursued a path defined by structure, studying architecture at the Technische Hogeschool Delft. By 1911, his life had moved toward the bustling energy of Amsterdam, where he worked as an intern for Joseph Cuypers and contributed to the construction of the Amsterdamse effectenbeurs. Yet, the rigid lines of architecture could not hold him. In November 1912, he abandoned his formal studies to dedicate himself entirely to the canvas.

His early brushwork carried the heavy, emotional weight of Vincent van Gogh. As he matured, however, a deeper preoccupation with the unseen began to shape his hand. Korteweg was not only a painter but also a theosopher, seeking a spiritual resonance within his art. This search for meaning led him to Munich in 1913, where he sought out the intellectual circles of Schwabing. It was here that his work began to align with the profound ideas of Wassily Kandinsky and the expressive energy of the Der Blaue Reiter group.

The Munich Years and Artistic Evolution

In Munich, Korteweg found a community that mirrored his own internal searching. He visited Kandinsky’s studio and established connections with figures such as Franz Marc. The influence of these artists, alongside the dramatic shadows of Rembrandt and the elongated forms of El Greco, transformed his approach. His work moved away from mere representation toward a more symbolic language. During this period, he participated in significant exhibitions, including the Erste Deutscher Herbstsalon in Berlin, where his talent was noted by his contemporaries.

His development was marked by a fascination with the spiritual dimensions of color and form. He drew strength from the works of Edvard Munch and the more abstract tendencies of the Der Blaue Reiter painters. This era produced some of his most significant compositions, characterized by a tension between classical influence and modern abstraction. His paintings from this time, such as Laokoon, reflect a mind attempting to bridge the gap between the physical world and the metaphysical realm.

A Brief Departure

The trajectory of Korteweg’s life was cut short far from his Dutch origins. After returning to Amsterdam in 1914 and engaging with local artistic circles like De Onafhankelijken, his path led him to India. He died in Chennai on 12 November 1917, leaving behind a body of work that captured a fleeting moment of intense creative transition. Though his career was brief, the pieces he left behind—ranging from landscapes like De Amstelbrug to complex arrangements like Composition—remain as traces of a man who sought to paint the very essence of thought and spirit.
