The Weight of Existence

Born in Košice, Slovakia, in 1981, Boris Sirka has spent much of his life navigating the tension between the material world and the internal psyche. His early years were shaped by a different ambition; as a child, he once dreamed of becoming a surgeon, a path defined by precision and the physical reality of the human body. This interest in the tangible and the anatomical eventually found a different outlet through visual art. After studying at the Faculty of Arts at the Technical University in Košice, specifically within the Rudo Sikora Graphic Studio, he began to develop a visual language that would define his career.

His early work was marked by a striking technical skill that quickly caught the attention of collectors. During his formative years, his paintings were characterized by a focus on line and content drawn from the fringes of popular culture. He looked toward the gritty aesthetics of B-movie horror, comic books, and the heavy, dark energy of death metal. These themes provided a foundation for a style that was both disciplined and raw, establishing him as a significant voice among a generation of artists emerging from Košice in the early 2000s.

A Shift in Form and Feeling

As his practice evolved, Sirka moved away from the structured certainty of line toward a more fluid and uncertain way of working. He began to experiment with the way paint behaves on a surface, mixing acrylic with water to allow colors to bleed and spread across the canvas. This transition reflected a deeper shift in his thematic concerns, moving from the external stories of pop culture toward the internal landscapes of human anxiety and existential dread. His work began to explore the friction between the desire for material comfort and the persistent, underlying sense of social and personal threat.

His approach to medium has become increasingly complex, blending his painterly skills with his experience in sculpture. He often works on a large scale, using the physical presence of the work to command the space around it. His toolkit includes a variety of textures and materials that mimic or embody different states of matter:

A significant chapter in his development occurred during a residency in Tokyo, Japan. The experience of living in a culture defined by its own unique sense of order and etiquette left a lasting impression on his perspective. He has spoken of the profound impact of Japanese culture, noting how the sense of civility and the specific way of life there offered a different way of perceiving the world. This period added a new layer to his exploration of spatial play and the atmosphere of his compositions.

Today, Sirka continues to work as a researcher and educator within the Department of Fine Arts and Intermedia at TUNA. His practice remains a constant negotiation between the urge to create and the exhaustion that follows intense periods of production. Whether working with the starkness of a drawing or the density of a concrete cast, his work remains focused on the darker, more complicated aspects of being alive.
