Jean Pierre Alexandre Antigna (1817-1878) stands as a significant figure in French Romantic realism, an artist whose oeuvre captured the stark realities of urban poverty and imbued his canvases with profound empathy. Born in Orleans, France, Antigna’s formative artistic education began under the tutelage of François Salmon, establishing him firmly within the tradition of local landscape painting. However, his ambition extended beyond regional aesthetics; he pursued formal training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he honed his skills alongside luminaries like Sébastien Norblin de la Gourdaigne and Paul Delaroche – masters who profoundly shaped his artistic vision. Yet, a pivotal moment arrived during his residency in the impoverished Île Saint-Louis district of Paris.
