Beskrivelse af samlerobjektet

On a trip to Zurich, the artist struck up a conversation with 33 Dominican women who were on their way to the city and who had been deceived with the promise that they would find a better situation outside their country. On the contrary, the artist was told, those who were taking them to Zurich took their passports and planned to force them into sex work. With this piece, Ramírez questions the consequences of migration caused by coloniality in the Caribbean countries and the way in which it specifically affects feminized bodies. She also reflects on how human trafficking for sex work has been used to establish surveillance policies on colonized people.

A Voice Carved in Wood: The Legacy of Belkis Ramírez

Belkis Ramírez (1957–2019) stands as a singular and transformative figure within the landscape of Dominican contemporary art. Born in the province of Santiago Rodríguez, her creative journey was deeply rooted in the vibrant cultural textures of the Dominican Republic. Her formal education at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, where she studied architecture and graphic design, provided her with a rigorous foundation in spatial relationships and structural precision. This architectural sensibility would later become a cornerstone of her practice, allowing her to move beyond the flat surface of the print and into the immersive, three-dimensional realms of installation art.

Ramírez’s artistic evolution was marked by a profound commitment to social critique and the exploration of identity. As a member of the influential Colectivo Generación 80, alongside artists such as Jorge Pineda and Tony Catellan, she participated in a collaborative movement that sought to engage critically with the pressing social issues of her time. Her work became a powerful vessel for discussing themes of feminism, environmental preservation, and the complex power dynamics inherent in post-colonial Caribbean societies. Through her art, she interrogated patriarchal structures and celebrated female resilience, often placing the female body at the center of her narrative struggle.

Mastery of Technique and Materiality

Perhaps the most significant contribution Ramírez made to the medium of printmaking was her pioneering use of wood engraving and woodcut. For a long period, she was essentially the sole practitioner of this demanding technique in the Dominican Republic, a dedication that eventually inspired a new generation of local artists to embrace the medium. Her approach to xylography was nothing short of revolutionary; she did not merely use the woodblock as a tool for reproduction but treated the carved sheet itself as an intervened artistic object. Critics have noted her ability to blur the lines between relief printing, sculpture, and painting, creating what some have described as "sculptopainting."

This mastery of materiality allowed her to weave complex symbolic resonances into her work. Her prints often featured intricate textures and experimental techniques that advanced new ways of discussing the body and its relationship to power. In pieces such as Volare, she utilized her narrative strength to question the harrowing consequences of migration and human trafficking, specifically focusing on how these colonial legacies affect feminized bodies. By manipulating both the physical wood and the conceptual space of the installation, she transformed the act of printmaking into a visceral, political experience.

Recognition and Historical Significance

The impact of Belkis Ramírez’s work was recognized early and repeatedly by the highest institutions in her home country. Her ability to push the boundaries of installation art earned her First Place in the Dominican Republic Biennial National Visual Arts Prize in both 1992 and 1994. These accolades cemented her reputation as a visionary who dared to challenge the conservative norms of the Caribbean art scene. Beyond the borders of the Dominican Republic, her work found resonance in international contexts, with exhibitions spanning from Kassel and Mexico to the United States and Spain.

The enduring significance of Ramírez lies in her ability to transform the language of printmaking into a tool for social justice. Her artwork has even graced the pages of literature, appearing in works by acclaimed authors such as Julia Alvarez and Angela Hernández, further bridging the gap between visual art and cultural narrative. Today, she is remembered not only as a master technician but as an intellectual force whose carved lines and spatial installations continue to provoke thought regarding the environment, gender, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
