Kunstnerbiografi
The Life and Family of William Webb
Born in Tamworth, England, in 1780, William Webb lived a life deeply connected to the English landscape and its inhabitants. His roots in Tamworth provided the foundation for a career that would eventually see him active in Melton Mowbray. He was a man of his time, navigating the social and professional circles of the early nineteenth century until his death in 1846.
Family was a central part of William Webb's existence, and his household was a large, bustling one. He was a father to many children, some of whom grew up to carry on the family's creative legacy. His sons included William Thomas Bindley Webb, born in 1805, and John Webb, who lived until 1829, as well as Edward Walter Webb, born in 1810, and George Webb, born in 1822. His daughters were Sarah Frances Webb, born in 1816, and Jessy Webb, born in 1853. The family continued to expand with the births of Sarah Alice Pearson in 1850 and Matthew William Webb in 1851.
The Webb name became synonymous with artistic talent across generations. Many of his children and grandchildren followed in his footsteps, finding their own ways to express themselves through art. This lineage suggests a home filled with the constant presence of color and form, where the craft of painting was a shared language among kin.
Periods of Artistic Activity
Webb’s professional life was deeply rooted in the English countryside, particularly through his presence in Melton Mowbray. While his broader career spanned many years, his time in Melton Mowbray, LEI, between 1836 and 1846 marked a significant period of his output. During these years, he became a steady presence in the local art scene, establishing himself through a specialized focus that resonated with the social structures of the time.
His reputation grew through his connections to the hunting community. He spent much of his working life painting for the major Hunts in the surrounding counties. This work required him to capture the specific likenesses of animals and the people who cared for them, earning him the trust of many prominent patrons. His reach extended beyond the immediate English borders, as he also found work painting for patrons in Scotland, suggesting a demand for his specific skill set that crossed regional lines.
Notable Works and Subjects
Webb’s brush often turned toward the animals that defined the sporting life of his era. His oil on canvas works frequently captured the quiet, heavy moments before the action began. In one notable piece from about 1825, he painted a Blenheim Spaniel, focusing on the specific character of the breed. He had a way of rendering these animals with a sense of presence that felt grounded and real.
His interest in the racing world is perhaps most clearly seen in his depiction of the racehorse Euphrate. Created in 1825, this oil on canvas work captures a scene of anticipation on a racetrack. The horse is accompanied by a jockey and two handlers, all set against a backdrop that includes a distant village and other horses. It is a study of the tension that exists just before a race begins, placing the animals and their handlers within a wider, lived-in landscape.

Where to See the Works Today
Finding the traces of William Webb’s hand requires a bit of searching, as much of his output remains tucked away in private collections. For those who wish to see his paintings in a museum setting, the Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, holds two significant pieces. There, you can find A Blenheim Spaniel and Euphrate. These works offer a direct look at the subjects he spent so much of his life capturing.
Beyond these institutional collections, his presence can be felt in several historic locations across England. Some of his paintings are held within the Liverpool Art Gallery, providing a window into his skill for animal and sporting subjects. Other works have been located at Shugborough and Goodwood, places that reflect the circles of patrons he once painted for during his active years in Melton Mowbray and Tamworth.
