Born on 21 December 1907 to a family tied to the Great Western Railway, his early years were shaped by the rhythmic precision of the railway industry—a background that perhaps instilled in him the keen observational skills necessary for a lifetime of artistic inquiry. When his family moved to Neath in Glamorgan in 1918, Roberts began to develop a profound connection to the landscapes and communities of South Wales. His journey from a young boy observing the movement of trains to a master of expressionist painting is a testament to a life lived through the lens of deep, empathetic looking.

Roberts’ formal artistic evolution was nurtured at the Swansea Art School between 1928 and 1932. Under the guidance of William Grant Murray, a Scottish painter who championed Expressionism, Roberts learned to look beyond the mere surface of things.
