The Life and Art of Dominique Lang
Dominique Lang was a Luxembourgish painter who worked as a high-school teacher. His early career included a Pre-Raphaelite phase, during which he painted the Baptium of Christ, a fresco in the church at Junglinster, and several stations of the cross for the church in Dudelange. After studying art in Florence and Rome on a State grant, his work transitioned into a Symbolist period influenced by his reading of Ruskin, Schopenhauer, and Spengler. Notable works from this era include La jeune fille et la mort and La mort entrant dans la maison.
Following time in Paris and studies at the Munich Academy, Lang adopted an Impressionist style characterized by bright light and short brush strokes using blues and greens. His later paintings often depicted young women clothed in white or scenes along the River Alzette, such as orchards and fruit harvesting. In 1917, he painted Dudelange en 1917, showing an idyllic countryside. Lang was a member of the Cercle Artistique de Luxembourg and received the Grand-Duc Adolphe Prize in 1904 and 1919.
