A Life of Historical Documentation
Born in Lörrach, Germany, Friedrich Kaiser was a painter, engraver, war artist, and lithographer. His artistic journey began with training in Karlsruhe, where he initially sought to become a lithographer. After traveling to Paris, he became captivated by the battle paintings of Horace Vernet, which led him to dedicate his career to this genre of painting. Kaiser was a pioneer of pictorial reporting, creating drawings for the Leipziger illustrierte Zeitung—the first illustrated newspaper in Germany. His work documented significant historical events, including the Baden Revolution of 1848/49, the German-Danish War of 1864, the German War of 1866, and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71.
