The Life and Artistic Evolution of Hans Brasch
Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, Hans Brasch was the son of a painter and decorator. While his father envisioned him following the family business, Brasch pursued a career in fine arts. He studied at the Applied Arts College and later the Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a student of Ludwig Schmid-Reutte and Friedrich Fehr. He was also a Meisterschüler of the Academy Director, Hans Thoma. After studying the old masters, he worked with Ferdinand Hodler and traveled to Paris. Following a period of military service, he settled in Frankfurt as a freelance artist, becoming a sought-after portraitist.
In 1920, Brasch moved to an ancient farmstead at Urberg near Sankt Blasien on the fringes of the Black Forest. During this time, his focus expanded from portraiture and oil paintings to include still lifes of flowers and landscapes of the hill country and forests of south-west Germany. He began working extensively with watercolors on Japanese Washi paper, utilizing the medium's texture and color. His notable works from this era include a mural construct for the entrance hall of the railway station in Bad Orb, depicting the seasons, thermal springs, and local professions.
Later Years and Artistic Legacy
In 1930, Brasch returned to city life in Stuttgart, where he produced large wall paintings and window glass images for public buildings. Despite his lack of political involvement, his art was declared "degenerate" by the authorities in 1937, leading to the confiscation of works from public museums. He continued to exhibit in non-public galleries both in Germany and abroad. His reputation has since been based primarily on his portraits, though he is also recognized for his landscapes and line drawings for the magazine Fliegende Blätter.
