The Life and Career of Joseph Malachy Kavanagh
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Joseph Malachy Kavanagh was a painter known for his landscapes, seascapes, and rural scenes. His work often focused on the landscapes of Ireland, France, and Belgium, with a particular inspiration drawn from the scenery in and around Dublin. He was an Associate member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1889 and became a Member in 1892. During his career, he served as a teacher at the RHA schools from 1892 until 1911. In 1910, he was appointed as the Keeper of the Royal Hibernian Academy, holding a studio in Academy House on Abbey Street.
Kavanagh's life was marked by significant loss during the Easter Rising of 1916. A fire that engulfed Academy House destroyed his studio and much of his life's work, including the annual exhibition. Following this event, his health declined, and he died in Dublin in 1918.

In addition to his paintings, he created a series of etchings in 1890, which included scenes from Mont St. Michel and Bruges. Because his works are extremely rare, forgeries have occasionally been sold as his paintings, though his original works are rarely unsigned.
