Mirak Jamal: A Cartography of Displacement and Memory

Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1979, Mirak Jamal’s artistic journey is inextricably linked to a profound sense of displacement – not merely geographical, but also deeply personal. His childhood was shaped by the Iranian Revolution and the subsequent exodus of his family, initiating a nomadic existence that spanned Eastern Europe, Western Europe, the United States, and Canada. This constant movement, this perpetual state of ‘in-betweenness,’ forms the very bedrock of his artistic practice, informing both the subject matter and the techniques he employs.

Jamal’s early years were spent immersed in a world of transient spaces – train stations, highways, waiting rooms, and the edges of cities.
