His early education at the Birmingham School of Art, under the watchful guidance of masters such as Charles Morgan and Edward R Taylor, instilled in him a rigorous technical foundation. This period of intense study was further enriched in 1880 when he traveled to Verlat's Academy in Antwerp. In the studios of Belgium, Harris honed a meticulous approach to light and form, learning to capture the subtle interplay of shadow and substance that would later define his realist mastery.
