Biography

Early Life and Artistic Training

A. Curtis Williamson was born in Brampton, Ontario, on January 2, 1867. His early years in Canada provided the foundation for a life spent observing light and form. Before seeking instruction abroad, he spent two years in Toronto studying under John Wycliffe Lowes Foster. These formative years in Ontario shaped his initial understanding of the medium before he moved toward the formal traditions of Europe.

In 1889, his father provided the means for him to travel to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. This move marked a significant shift in his development, placing him in the center of a rigorous academic environment. His presence in the French capital was quickly recognized, as he began exhibiting his work in the Paris Salon in 1891. This period of study and exhibition established the technical grounding that would define his later approach to portraiture and landscape.

Travels and European Influence

After spending time in Paris, where he began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1891, he moved on to study in Holland. This period of study shaped the way he would approach light and shadow. When he returned to Toronto from Holland in 1892, he brought with him a style characterized by low tones. He did not stay away from the continent for long, returning to Europe in 1895 to paint in rural Holland.

His travels continued through France, where he painted alongside James Wilson Morrice at Fontainebeau. He also spent time painting at Barbizon. These experiences in the French countryside and the Dutch landscape left a mark on his work, grounding his practice in the sensibilities of the Hague school and the Barbizon school.

Professional Career and Memberships

His presence in the Canadian art scene became established in 1893 when he was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists. He remained a consistent part of their exhibitions for nearly three decades, showing his work there from 1893 until 1922. This period marked a steady integration into the professional circles of Toronto and the surrounding regions.

The year 1907 brought significant shifts in his professional standing. He helped found the Canadian Art Club and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts during that same year. His involvement with the club continued through administrative duties, as he served as its secretary between 1908 and 1909. He later held a position on the club's executive council from 1910 to 1915.

His studio was eventually established in the Studio Building, a space that allowed him to continue his practice as his approach to painting became freer. He remained active in the local art community, contributing to the foundation of the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto alongside other figures of the time.

Technique and Artistic Style

Williamson’s brushwork often leaned into a dark, tonal approach, a quality that earned him the nickname "the Canadian Rembrandt." He worked with a low tone, a habit formed after his time in Holland. This preference for shadow and muted light gave his paintings a specific weight. His work carried the sensibility of the Hague school or the Barbizon style, focusing on the quiet moods of the landscape and the subtle shifts in light within a scene.

In 1908, his manner of painting was noted for being particularly understated, a choice that some found startling. He did not rely on loud colors to command attention. Instead, he used a controlled palette to build form. As his career progressed, his hand changed. The tight, subdued control seen in his earlier years gave way to a freer style. His later paintings moved away from that initial restraint, showing a more relaxed application of paint.
