Biography

An American Miniaturist

Ann Hall was an American painter and miniaturist who achieved significant success in early nineteenth-century New York. Renowned for her engaging portraits, particularly those of children and young brides, she was a prominent figure in the art scene of her time. Her career was marked by high demand, with commissions often reaching five hundred dollars, and she earned distinction as the first woman to be elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in New York.

Born in Pomfret, Connecticut, Hall developed her artistic talents from a young age through various techniques such as cutting silhouettes, modeling figures in wax, and creating flower pictures and still lifes in watercolor and pencil. Her training included studying oil painting with Alexander Robertson in New York City and learning to make miniatures in watercolors on ivory from Samuel King in Newport, Rhode Island.

Artistic Career and Legacy

During her career, Hall lived in New York City, often residing at the mansion of her sister, Eliza Hall Ward. Her studio was located on the top floor of this residence, where she primarily produced portraits of women and children for wealthy clients. Her work was noted for a "glowing 'old master' color" derived from her study of early modern art and complex multi-figured compositions inspired by European religious paintings.

Hall's professional achievements included:

  • Participation in exhibitions at the American Academy of the Fine Arts starting by 1817.
  • Election as an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1828.
  • Unanimous election to full membership in the National Academy of Design in 1833.

She died in 1863 and was interred at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. Her estate was estimated at $100,000, earned through her commissions.
