Biography

Early Life and Artistic Training

Bertha E. Perrie was born on June 20, 1868, in Washington, D.C., United States. From her earliest years, she felt a deep pull toward the arts. This interest was not a passing phase but a steady presence that shaped her childhood in the capital. Her natural inclination toward drawing and observation eventually led her away from her home to seek formal instruction in the bustling art scene of the Northeast.

Her talent was recognized early on when she won a scholarship to the Art Students League of New York. This opportunity allowed her to study in a professional environment, honing the skills that would define her later years. After completing her time at the League, she returned to Washington, D.C., carrying the technical foundations she had built in New York back to the city where she was born.

Artistic Career and Organizations

After returning to Washington, D.C., Perrie became a central figure in the city's local art scene. Her influence was felt through her leadership and her commitment to teaching. For over 20 years, she shared her knowledge of watercolor at the Corcoran School of Art. She also served on the faculty at the Gunston Hall School and held a position at the Art Students League of Washington, where she had once been a student and later served on the governing board.

Her dedication to the community was reflected in her involvement with several key organizations. She was among the founders of the Arts Club of Washington and held charter membership in both the Society of Washington Artists and the Washington Water Color Club. She remained an active participant in the Washington Water Color Club, appearing in their exhibitions from 1891 until 1921. Her work also reached a wider audience through exhibitions at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the New York Watercolor Club.

In 1893, she traveled to Chicago to exhibit her work at the Palace of Fine Arts during the World's Columbian Exposition. Her skill was recognized through various honors, including the first and second Corcoran prizes at the Washington Water Color Club's exhibitions in 1904 and 1900, respectively. She also received a silver medal at the Appalachian Exposition of 1910. Her legacy is preserved in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Arts Club of Washington.

Technique and Artistic Style

Perrie found her greatest expression through the delicate medium of watercolor. This preference for the fluid nature of the paint allowed her to capture the shifting light and atmosphere of the natural world. While watercolor remained her primary language, she was equally comfortable working with the weight of oil paints or the precise, sharp lines of etching. Her versatility allowed her to move between these different textures, adapting her hand to the specific demands of each material.

Her subjects often drew her toward the edges of the land. She had a particular fondness for landscapes and seascapes, finding beauty in the way water met the shore or how light settled over a quiet harbor. In these scenes, her approach sat at a crossroads between realism and impressionism. She possessed the ability to render a scene with a sense of factual accuracy, yet she often leaned into the impressionistic way light and color interact in a single, fleeting moment.

This balance between the observed truth of a place and the feeling of its atmosphere defined her output. Whether she was etching a portrait or painting a harbor scene, her work remained rooted in a careful observation of her surroundings. She looked closely at the world, translating the movement of the sea and the stillness of the land into a visual record of the places she visited.
