Biography

Early Life and Artistic Training

Born in Frederiksberg on 17 September 1887, Georg Jacobsen began his path through the world of structure and form in a way that many might find unexpected for a painter. Before he ever took up the brush to define space through color, he sought to understand the very bones of the built environment. He pursued the study of architecture, beginning with a practical apprenticeship as a mason in Vejle. This early immersion in the physical weight and necessity of construction provided a foundation that would later inform his unique approach to the canvas.

His formal education continued at the Technical School in Copenhagen, where his interest in design and geometry took a more academic shape. However, the pull of fine art proved stronger than the discipline of the architect. In 1906, Georg Jacobsen was admitted to the preparatory class at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. It was here that his trajectory shifted from the drafting table toward the easel, as he sought to master the nuances of light and pigment rather than the permanence of stone and mortar.

During his years at the Academy, which lasted until 1911, he studied under the guidance of Viggo Johansen. This period of intense training allowed him to refine his technical skills and begin the long process of translating his architectural sensibilities into a visual language. The lessons learned within those academy walls, combined with his early understanding of structural integrity, would eventually define his approach to the composition of an image.

Years of Activity in Paris and Travels

The years following the Great War drew Jacobsen toward the heart of Paris, where he would reside from 1919 until 1935. This period was marked by a profound engagement with the evolving currents of modern thought. In those early Parisian years, between 1919 and 1920, he found himself in close collaboration with the Mexican painter Diego Rivera. Such encounters allowed him to absorb the spirit of his contemporaries while he sought to define his own visual language. His time in the city was not a static existence but a period of constant movement and observation.

His curiosity frequently led him away from the studios of France to seek inspiration in the light and history of the Mediterranean. He traveled to Italy in 1920 and again in 1934, seeking to understand the foundations of classical form. These excursions were complemented by a trip to Spain in 1922. Through these travels, he gathered the various threads of European tradition and modern experimentation, weaving them into his growing understanding of how an image should be constructed.

During these decades, his work began to reflect the tension between the naturalist traditions of his training and the new, structured approaches emerging from the Parisian circles. He moved through these landscapes, absorbing the essence of the places he visited, and returned to his canvas with a renewed sense of purpose. His experiences in these foreign lands provided the necessary nourishment for the theoretical and practical developments that would define his later career.

Teaching and Professional Work in Norway

In 1935, Jacobsen moved to Oslo, beginning a significant chapter of his life that would leave a lasting mark on the Norwegian art scene. He spent the next five years working at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts, where his presence became a steady influence on the local creative community. His dedication to the craft was recognized in 1936 when he was appointed as an extraordinary professor at the Statens Kunstakademi. Through his teaching, he guided a generation of Norwegian artists, imparting the rigorous principles of composition and order that he had refined during his years abroad.

His influence extended far beyond the classroom walls, reaching into the very fabric of the nation's public spaces. He took on monumental tasks, applying his theories of image building to large-scale decorations and frescoes. These professional engagements allowed him to translate his private studies of geometry and light into public monuments. His presence in Norway was so deeply felt that his legacy remains preserved within the country's most important collections, with six of his works held in the National Gallery of Norway.

Artistic Style and Compositional Principles

Jacobsen sought to impose a sense of order upon the canvas, driven by a deep-seated necessity to organize space through the use of geometric figures. His vision was shaped by the structural lessons of Paul Cézanne and the fragmented logic of Cubism, yet he remained anchored to the foundational composition principles of the Old Masters. He did not merely paint a scene; he constructed it. This approach required him to work upon the surface in several places simultaneously, gradually gathering disparate parts into a unified whole through a rigorous, mathematical discipline.

His method relied heavily on a personal proportions system and a specific subdivision technique known as 'the Harmonic Gate'. By applying the Golden Ratio to his compositions, he sought to tap into what he believed were the eternal laws of painting. This devotion to geometry allowed him to maintain a structured clarity even when his subjects appeared more naturalistic. His interest in the physical properties of color led him to experiment with the ancient textures of Italian tempera and the expansive scale of frescoes, seeking a marriage between modern constructive thought and traditional technique.

Major Commissions and Notable Works

The artist's hand found profound expression in his 1922 work, Haren, a piece that remains a central pillar of his creative output. This work reflects the deep conviction he held regarding the necessity of order and the active use of geometric figures to organize the surface of a canvas. Through such focused studies, he sought to bring a sense of structural clarity to the natural world, a pursuit that defined much of his career as he moved between the studios of Paris and the academies of Scandinavia.

His commitment to monumental art led him to undertake significant decorative projects that integrated his theories of composition into the very fabric of public life. Between 1935 and 1938, he dedicated himself to the decoration of the Søndermarkens krematorium in Copenhagen. This endeavor required a careful balance of form and space, a skill he would later apply to the walls of other civic institutions. His influence extended into the halls of governance and healing, as seen in the frescoes he executed in the Lyngby rådhus between 1942 and 1949. These works allowed his principles of geometric subdivision to inhabit the spaces where people gathered for the most significant moments of their lives.

Even in his later years, the impulse to decorate large-scale surfaces remained strong. In 1955, he turned his attention to the Rikshospitalet in Oslo, where he executed further frescoes. These commissions demonstrate how his interest in the old masters' rules for constructing a picture was not merely a theoretical pursuit, but a practical method used to transform the atmosphere of public buildings through the disciplined application of light and shape.
