John Frederick Kensett was born on March 22, 1816, in Cheshire, Connecticut. His early years were shaped by the steady, precise work of his father, Thomas Kensett, an English-born engraver. The training continued under the guidance of both his father and his uncle, Alfred Daggett. He remained in the New Haven area, working as an engraver until about 1838. In 1840, Kensett left for Europe to study painting. He did not travel alone; Asher Durand and John William Casilear were with him during this period.
