Biography

Early Life and Artistic Training

Manuel Rivera, sometimes referred to as Manuel Rivera Hernández, was born in Granada, Spain, on April 23, 1927. His early inclinations leaned toward the tactile and the three-dimensional. He began his formal training as a sculptor, working within the studio of Martín Simón. This foundational period in Granada provided him with a rigorous understanding of form and volume before his interests eventually shifted toward the canvas.

In 1945, at the age of 18, Rivera moved into the next phase of his education. He began his studies at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Seville, an institution that would help shape his technical proficiency. This academic grounding in Seville provided the necessary discipline for a career that would eventually span both sculpture and painting, bridging the gap between the physical weight of carved objects and the spatial complexities of the two-dimensional plane.

Move to Madrid and Public Commissions

The year 1951 marked a significant shift in Rivera's trajectory when he relocated to Madrid. This move transitioned him from the foundational training of his youth toward a period of professional expansion. In the capital, he established a reputation for his ability to handle large-scale environments, finding a niche in the creation of murals and frescoes. His work during this era was deeply integrated into the physical fabric of the city, as he navigated the demands of both civic and religious spaces.

His proficiency in these public mediums led to a steady stream of commissions that extended far beyond the streets of Madrid. Rivera became a sought-after figure for monumental works, receiving appointments to decorate churches and public buildings in various cities throughout Spain. These large-scale projects required a command of space and a sense of permanence, qualities that defined his early professional standing as he moved away from the smaller, more intimate scale of his initial studies.

The El Paso Group and Abstraction

The 1950s marked a decisive shift in Rivera’s creative direction as he moved away from figurative traditions toward the language of abstraction. This transition was signaled by his participation in the 1953 Congreso de Arte Abstracto de Santander, an event that helped define the emerging boundaries of the movement. His work began to favor the exploration of space and form over the literal representation of subjects, a change that mirrored the broader shifts occurring within the Spanish art world during the post-war era.

In 1957, Rivera became a founding member of the El Paso group in Madrid. This collective sought to redefine contemporary Spanish art by embracing experimentation and challenging established norms. Alongside fellow artists Rafael Canogar, Luis Feito, Juana Francés, Manolo Millares, Pablo Serrano, Antonio Suárez, and Antonio Saura, Rivera helped push the boundaries of the avant-garde. The group’s influence extended beyond Spanish borders, culminating in a final exhibition at the L'Attico gallery in Rome in 1960.

Technique and Artistic Style

Rivera’s artistic evolution was marked by a decisive departure from the figurative traditions of his early training. While his initial years were spent mastering the representation of form, the 1950s brought a shift toward abstraction. This transition was not merely a change in subject matter but a fundamental reimagining of the canvas. He began to favor a dynamic abstraction, utilizing fragmented forms and bold colors to navigate the space between the seen and the felt. In certain periods, he chose to dispense with color entirely, seeking a different kind of clarity by taking refuge in the starkness of black and white.

His experimentation extended beyond the traditional surface of the canvas. Rivera became known for his unconventional use of metal cloth as a support, a choice that allowed for a unique interplay of light and texture. This material choice transformed the painting into a three-dimensional experience, where the mesh and wire created hypnotic patterns. By 1967, his technical inquiries expanded further as he began to incorporate artistic techniques and ideas drawn from Asian cultures, adding a new layer of complexity to his visual language.

Key Works and Museum Collections

The physical presence of Rivera’s experimentation is preserved in several major international institutions. His 1963 work, Metamorphosis (Mirror of the Night), is held by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. This piece, composed of oil and polychromed wire mesh and metal cloth on wood, reflects the material shifts that defined his later years. His practice also found a place within the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. These holdings represent the reach of his influence beyond the Spanish borders.

The breadth of his recognition extends through Europe and across the Atlantic. His works are included in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In Italy, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome maintains his pieces, while the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York also holds his work. These various repositories ensure that his transition from figurative painting to complex abstraction remains accessible to scholars and viewers alike.
