Biography

The Etcher of the Belle Epoque

In the bustling streets of Paris, where the light of the late nineteenth century began to shift into a new era, Manuel Robbe found his calling. Born in 1872, he moved through the halls of the Lycée Condorcet and later the Académie Julian, absorbing the technical rigors of his craft. His early training under the engraver Lois Legrand planted the seeds of an interest in the chemical and physical transformations of printmaking. This curiosity led him to the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Eugène Delâtre, a man who was himself a pioneer in the delicate art of color etching.

Robbe did not merely seek to replicate images; he sought to manipulate the very essence of ink and paper. He became an experimenter, a man who found beauty in the scientific precision of his tools. His hands mastered the à la poupée method, using small rags to apply various colors directly to a printing plate, building layers of hue with each impression. He also turned to the sugar-lift technique, a process where a chemical concointion creates thin white lines through the use of water and acid, sharpening the composition with sudden intensity.

A Vision of Parisian Life

The works produced by Robbe often centered on the elegant inhabitants of the French capital. He had a particular affinity for depicting women, capturing them in various states of daily existence. These figures were not merely subjects of beauty; they possessed a certain piercing expression that suggested a deeper, more mysterious interior life. Whether it was a woman engaged in a quiet moment or a figure moving through the Boulogne Park, Robbe applied his mastery of aquatint and drypoint to create tonal effects that felt almost iridescent.

His landscapes were equally significant, often drawing from the scenery of Brittany or the manicured parks of Paris. Under the pseudonym Alphonse Lafitte, he even published landscapes that allowed him to explore different facets of his creative identity. His ability to balance line and color-blots gave his prints a sense of modernity that resonated with the audiences of his time. The textures he achieved through aquatint allowed for a painterly quality that bridged the gap between the precision of engraving and the fluidity of painting.

Recognition and Legacy

The progress of Robbe’s career was marked by significant honors within the French art community. In 1900, at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, he was awarded a Gold Medal, a distinction that signaled his arrival among the leading etchers of his generation. His dedication to the craft led to his membership in the National Society of Fine Arts in 1905, and his works were frequently exhibited with the Société des Artistes Français and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

His prints found their way into the hands of important publishers like Edmund Sagot and Georges Petit, ensuring that his technical innovations reached a wide audience. Even as he worked on pieces for advertising posters, such as those promoting beauty products, his personal flair remained evident. Though he passed away in 1936, the collections held in institutions like the Bibliothèque Nationale de France ensure that his meticulous approach to color and light remains preserved for those who study the artistry of the Belle Epoque.
