Biography

Early Life, Family and Training

Born in Copenhagen on 22 March 1872, Marie Sandholt was raised within a well-to-do family. She was the daughter of the physician Peter Boll Wivet Sandholt and Louise Victoria Aagaard. Her upbringing provided the stability necessary for her to pursue a formal education in the arts, a path that would eventually lead her away from the domestic expectations of her era.

Her formal training began at the Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder, the Arts and Crafts School for Women. Seeking to deepen her technical proficiency, she moved on to the Kunstakademiets Kunstskole for Kvinder, where she continued her studies from 1892 to 1901. These years of academic rigor provided the foundation for her later work as both a painter and a ceramist.

A significant, though perhaps unexpected, chapter of her education occurred in Skamstrup, near Holbæk. While working as a maid in the home of the painter Viggo Pedersen, Marie Sandholt found herself immersed in an environment of active creation. This period of service proved to be a vital part of her artistic development, offering a practical, lived experience of the painter's life that supplemented her formal schooling.

Artistic Career and Professional Activities

Sandholt’s professional life was marked by a versatile engagement with various mediums and instructional roles. Following her formal training, she sought broader perspectives through study trips to Italy and Paris. During her time in France, she spent two months at the Académie Colarossi, an experience that helped refine her technical approach. This period of study coincided with a time when many women were restricted to textiles, yet she established herself as a serious oil painter.

Her career was not confined to the canvas. Between 1905 and 1906, she worked as a ceramist, designing porcelain figures for Bing & Grøndahl. This period of craftsmanship was accompanied by a role as an embroidery teacher at the Arts and Crafts School for Women, a position she held starting in 1905. Her ability to move between the delicate precision of porcelain and the expansive nature of oil painting defined her professional output.

Public recognition for her work came through consistent exhibition. She was a regular presence at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, exhibiting there from 1895 to 1943. Beyond these institutional settings, she arranged several solo shows throughout the country, bringing her depictions of landscapes and figures to a wider audience. Her presence in the Danish art scene remained steady for nearly half a century.

Technique and Artistic Style

Sandholt was a dedicated practitioner of Naturalism within the Danish painting tradition. She approached her work as an oil painter with a profound level of seriousness, often working from a foundation of careful preparation. Her process frequently began in the open air, where she produced watercolor sketches to capture the immediate nuances of light and form. These outdoor studies provided the essential groundwork for the more substantial oil paintings she later composed in her studio.

Her subject matter leaned heavily toward the natural world, with a particular focus on landscapes. She frequently turned her attention to coastal scenes, forests, and the intricate structures of trees. Following the devastation of the First World War, her connection to the natural landscape deepened, and she developed a specific, lasting preoccupation with the depiction of trees. This focus allowed her to explore the textures and rhythms of the woods with a nuanced, free-moving style that moved beyond mere imitation of nature.

Key Works and Notable Portraits

Sandholt’s early output often focused on the intimate realities of domestic life. In 1902, she completed Joy of Motherhood, a work that sought to capture the natural essence of motherhood and the concept of fertility. This period of her career also produced an untitled work from about 1900, which remains part of the permanent collection at the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum. These early explorations established her ability to handle sensitive, human subjects with a sense of quiet dignity.

As her practice matured, her brushwork moved toward more expansive, naturalistic scenes. She became particularly drawn to the outdoors, painting landscapes that favored a free and nuanced style. Her interest in the natural world deepened following the First World War, leading her to focus heavily on the depiction of trees and forests. These studies often began as watercolor sketches made in the open air, which she later translated into more substantial oil paintings within the confines of her studio.

Her skill in capturing character was equally evident in her portraiture. In 1911, she turned her attention to the stage, producing a portrait of the actor Johannes Poulsen in the role of Feste from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. This work demonstrated her capacity to translate theatrical energy into a static medium, balancing the specific requirements of a character study with her established naturalistic approach.
