Biography

Early Life, Family and Training

Willem Troost entered the world in Amsterdam in 1684, born to Cornelis Troost and Sarah van Eersel. He was the sixth of seven sons, a position in a large family that suggests a structured, perhaps crowded, upbringing. Before he ever touched a brush, his path was directed toward commerce; he spent eight years apprenticed to a clerk. This lengthy period of clerical training provided a foundation of discipline that preceded his actual artistic development. He was the uncle of the celebrated painter Cornelis Troost, placing him within a lineage of significant Dutch talent.

His transition from clerical work to fine art was marked by formal instruction under established hands. Between 1704 and 1709, Willem Troost studied under Johannes Glauber. This period of apprenticeship was critical, as it connected him to the specific traditions of landscape painting. He also received training from Herman van der Mijn, further refining his technical capabilities. These years of study transformed him from a clerk's apprentice into a professional capable of navigating the complex demands of 18th-century European art.

Patrons, Workshop and Commissions

Troost’s professional trajectory was defined by high-level service to European nobility. In 1712, he secured a position as court painter in Dusseldorp, working under the patronage of Johann Wilhelm, the Elector Palatine. This connection facilitated his movement through significant urban centers; he was active in Keulen from 1716 to 1728 and later worked in Duisburg, Kleef, and Essen. During his time in Essen, he was employed by Princess von der Pfalz-Sulzbach, who commissioned him for portraits.

His technical utility extended far beyond small-scale portraiture. He was explicitly recorded as a decorative painter of interiors, a role that required a specific understanding of architectural integration. He specialized in producing behangsels—large-scale canvases designed to be flush-mounted into the wood paneling of entire rooms. These monumental works were commissioned for the walls of palaces and grand manors, functioning as permanent fixtures of the architectural environment rather than mere hanging art.

Technique and Style

Troost specialized in the creation of warm, fantastical landscapes that prioritized atmosphere over topographical accuracy. His work often focused on Italianate scenery, recreating idealized, sun-drenched environments even when working in Northern Europe. This preference for the imaginary allowed him to produce expansive, panoramic views. He achieved these effects through a variety of media, including oil on canvas or panel, as well as more delicate applications of gouache, bodycolour, and watercolour. In his more detailed landscape studies, he frequently utilized black ink framing lines to define the composition.

His technical versatility extended to large-scale interior decorations known as behangsels. These were not mere paintings but monumental works designed to be flush-mounted into the wood panelling of grand rooms in palaces and manors. Such commissions required a command of scale and a specific decorative sensibility to integrate seamlessly with architectural elements. Whether working on a massive canvas or a smaller gouache, his output remained centered on the construction of these highly structured, picturesque settings.

Family and Personal Life

Willem Troost’s domestic life was inextricably linked to his professional trajectory. In 1714, he married the painter Jacoba Maria van Nickelen. This partnership likely extended beyond the household, as the couple may have traveled together to Dusseldorp to secure their positions as court painters. Their shared professional identity suggests a life where the boundaries between private companionship and artistic labor were constantly blurred.

The couple had eight children, a large family that reflected the social realities of the 18th century. Talent clearly ran in the lineage, though it manifested in diverse ways. One daughter became a gifted musician, moving away from the visual arts into the auditory realm. His son followed a more graphic path, proving himself a capable draughtsman who applied his skills to the design of patterns for silk fabrics. These descendants demonstrate how the technical discipline of the household translated into varied creative outputs.
