A Journey Through the Lens Born in Hong Kong in 1963, Karl Chiu’s path toward the visual arts was shaped by a diverse and wandering intellectual journey. As a teenager, he harbored ambitions of becoming a missionary, a calling that perhaps instilled in him a deep-seated interest in the human condition. This curiosity led him to Taiwan, where he pursued studies in sociology, providing him with a foundational understanding of societal st
ructures and human interaction. His trajectory eventually took him to the United States, specifically to San Francisco, where he transitioned from the study of society to the study of light and shadow through photography. It was here that his professional identity began to coalesce, as he trained to become a photojournalist, a role that would later allow him to document the shifting landscapes of his homeland.
