Robert Field (1769-1819) was a leading miniaturist painter active in England, the US & Canada. Known for neo-classical portraiture, he painted prominent figures like George Washington and captured 19th-century society with accomplished skill.
The sitter (1739-1799) was the Irish-born collector of customs for the Port of Philadelphia.
