The Urban Architect of Soulful Scripts

In the vibrant heart of Tunis, where history and modernity intertwine, the artistic journey of Hosni Hertelli began not with a brush, but with the structured lens of urban planning. Born in 1980, Hertelli’s early fascination with spatial organization and visual storytelling provided a unique foundation for what would become his signature aesthetic. At twenty-four, a profound creative impulse led him to abandon the rigid blueprints of architecture for the fluid possibilities of fine art. Under the professional moniker Shoof, he emerged as a vital voice in contemporary Tunisian art, translating the structural logic of his training into a deeply emotive visual language.

A Calligraphic Dance of Heritage and Form

Hertelli’s work is a masterful fusion of plastic art and the rhythmic elegance of calligraphy. He does not merely use the Arabic alphabet as a decorative element; rather, he treats each letter as a living subject, weaving it into a complex tapestry of meaning. This approach is deeply anchored in the rich literary and Islamic traditions of Tunisia, where geometric forms and repetitive patterns serve to evoke profound concepts of unity, balance, and contemplation. Through his hands, the alphabet becomes a tool for spiritual exploration, bridging the gap between ancient heritage and modern abstraction.

Textures of Time and Light

The breadth of Hertelli’s medium allows him to capture the multifaceted essence of the Tunisian experience. His photographic works often transport the viewer to desolate desert vistas, where weathered stone formations stand in silent dialogue with resilient palm trees. These images act as meditations on isolation and the relentless passage of time, capturing a sense of documentary truth. In stark contrast to the raw earthiness of his photography, his more tactile works—such as intricate silver and gold calligraphy panels—offer a luxurious, layered experience. Through stencil techniques and metallic textures, he creates portraits and patterns that possess a striking narrative depth, inviting the viewer to touch the very surface of history with their eyes.

A Global Resonance

The international recognition of Hertelli’s talent reached a significant milestone in 2015 with his debut solo exhibition at the itinerance gallery in France. This pivotal moment introduced his unique visual vocabulary to a global audience, solidifying his reputation as an artist capable of capturing both the local landscape and universal human emotions. Today, his work stands as a testament to the enduring power of Tunisian identity, offering a modern Islamic aesthetic that resonates far beyond the borders of North Africa.
