Born in the heart of Chicago in 1977, Rashid Johnson emerged as a defining force in the contemporary art world through a practice that seamlessly weaves together personal narrative and broader historical inquiry. A pivotal moment arrived in 2001, when Johnson was featured in the landmark Freestyle exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem, curated by Thelma Golden.
