The Life and Art of Albert Namatjira

Born Elea Namatjira at the Hermannsburg Lutheran Mission, he was a member of the Western Arrernte people. After being raised at the mission and undergoing initiation into the Arrernte community, he began painting seriously in 1934 under the guidance of Rex Battarbee. His work focused on the landscapes of Central Australia, often featuring rugged geological features and distinctive flora, such as majestic white gum trees and twisted scrub. These watercolours were noted for their high quality of illumination, capturing the gashes of the land and the twists in the trees.

Namatjira's unique style blended indigenous landscapes with Western-style painting techniques. His compositions often utilized contrasting colours, such as red hills against green trees, and featured intricate patterns and high horizons. His depictions of trees were sometimes described as being more like portraits than landscapes. His artistic legacy continues through his descendants, including his great-grandson, the award-winning artist Vincent Namatjira.

Recognition and Legacy

Namatjira achieved significant recognition, becoming a household name in Australia. In 1956, a portrait of him by William Dargie became the first of an Aboriginal person to win the Archibald Prize. His achievements included being awarded the Queen's Coronation Medal in 1953 and being honored with an Australian postage stamp in 1968. He was also an honorary member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales.

Throughout his life, Namatjira navigated complex legal and social landscapes. In 1957, he was granted full rights of citizenship, which allowed him to vote and own land. Despite his success, he faced significant hardships, including a period of incarceration in a native reserve at Papunya. He died of heart disease in an Alice Springs hospital in 1959. His works are now held in many of Australia's major art galleries.
