A Life in Theatre and Drama
Samuel James Arnold was an English dramatist and theatrical manager. Born to the composer Samuel Arnold, he received an artistic education that shaped his career in the London theatre scene. His dramatic works included musical plays such as Auld Robin Gray, Who Pays the Reckoning?, and The Shipwreck. He also contributed to comedies like A Prior Claim and Man and Wife. While some critics, such as William Hazlitt, offered mixed reviews of his writing—ranging from descriptions of his work as having "lifeless wit" to praising Two Words as a "delightful little piece"—Arnold remained a significant figure in the theatrical landscape of his time.
Management of the English Opera House
Arnold played a pivotal role in the history of the Lyceum Theatre in London, which he transformed into the English Opera House. Under his management, the venue became a site for significant musical productions, including the first English performances of several operas. Notable works staged under his direction included:
- Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz
- Antonio Salieri's Tarare
- Ferdinando Paer's The Freebooters
- Ferdinand Ries's The Robber's Bride
- Heinrich Marschner's Der Vampyr
In addition to his theatrical pursuits, Arnold served as a magistrate and was married to the daughter of the Poet Laureate, Henry James Pye.
