The Life and Early Work of Jacques Doucet
Jacques Doucet was born on April 9, 1924, in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. Even in his earliest years, he spent his time creating drawings and writing scenes that leaned toward the humorous. These early sketches and stories formed the first traces of his hand. In 1941, he traveled to Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, where he met a poet and painter named Max Jacob. It was during this time that Jacob encouraged him to pursue drawing and painting more seriously. This period of mentorship helped shape the direction of his developing practice.
The years of the Second World War brought significant disruption to his life. During the conflict, Jacques Doucet was interned as a political prisoner. This period of confinement occurred while he was still establishing his presence as a painter. After the war ended, he moved toward his studies in Montparnasse, continuing the work he had begun in his youth.
Artistic Movements and Group Affiliations
After the war, the focus shifted toward the studios of Montparnasse. It was there that the foundations for a new direction were laid, following a brief encounter in Budapest in 1947 with Corneille. This meeting opened a door to the Experimentele Groep in Holland, a connection that would lead to more formal associations. The influence of these circles was visible even in the small details, such as the cover drawn for the second issue of the magazine ‘Reflex'.
By 1948, a more defined collective identity emerged. Alongside Jean-Michel Atlan, Doucet became a member of the CoBrA group. This period was marked by a presence in major European exhibitions, including the 1949 show in Amsterdam and the 1951 exhibition in Liege. These gatherings provided a space where his evolving approach to form and material could be seen alongside his contemporaries.
Technique and Artistic Style
Doucet’s practice was defined by a restless engagement with various materials. While his roots lay in Surrealism, his approach shifted as his career progressed. Following his involvement with the CoBrA group, his compositions moved toward a more abstract language. He moved away from representational forms, letting shapes and textures take precedence over recognizable subjects.
He did not limit himself to the canvas. Much of his output took place on paper, where he explored the tactile qualities of lithographs, gouaches, and collages. His drawings often carried a sense of immediacy. He also applied his visual language to larger formats, creating templates intended for woven wall hangings.
