Premier Disque - Robert Delaunay

Robert Delaunay’s “Premier Disque” embodies the core principles of Orphism – a revolutionary movement that sought to liberate painting from representational constraints and prioritize color as its primary expressive element. Created in 1913-14, this silkscreen print captures the spirit of experimentation and dynamism characteristic of the era.

Style & Technique

Delaunay’s approach aligns perfectly with Cubism's fragmentation of form, yet diverges significantly from its objective depiction of reality. Instead, he employs bold geometric shapes – circles predominantly – arranged in concentric layers to create a visual rhythm that mimics musical composition. The use of Tintoretto 300g/sqm silk screen printing ensures exceptional color fidelity and textural detail, faithfully reproducing the artist’s original vision.

Historical Context

“Premier Disque” emerged during a period of profound artistic upheaval in Europe. Dadaism and Surrealism were challenging established conventions, while Futurism championed speed and technology. Delaunay's work responded to these currents by rejecting traditional perspective and embracing abstraction as a means of conveying emotion and intellectual concepts. Influenced by thinkers like Henri Bergson, who explored the concept of duration – the flow of time – Delaunay aimed to capture the fleeting nature of experience.

Symbolism & Emotional Impact

The central circle in “Premier Disque” symbolizes wholeness and unity, juxtaposed against the radiating circles that represent movement and dispersion. This duality reflects the broader philosophical concerns of Orphism—a desire to transcend dualities and achieve a harmonious synthesis between opposing forces. The vibrant palette – reds, blues, yellows, greens, and purples – contributes to the painting’s emotional intensity, evoking feelings of energy, optimism, and visual delight.

Legacy & Influence

"Premier Disque" stands as a testament to Delaunay's pioneering role in shaping modern art. It inspired countless artists who followed him, establishing Orphism as a cornerstone of abstract expressionism. Its bold color combinations and dynamic composition continue to resonate with viewers today, demonstrating the enduring power of artistic innovation.
