His training under the Dutch landscape painter Willem Maris provided him with an understanding of light and earth tones, while his time in the studio of Fernand Cormon introduced him to a different, French-influenced approach to form. This combination resulted in a style rooted firmly in Realism.

His canvases often focus on the quiet gravity of domestic and maritime scenes. In works like Gathered at the Table (1909), he captures a family unit with a heavy, grounded atmosphere. He uses loose brushwork and deep, earthy pigments to define the interplay of shadow within an interior space. There is no attempt to romanticize the scene; there is only the observation of light hitting a kitchen surface or a figure's shoulder. Technical Foundations and Subject Matter

Zon’s development was shaped by two distinct pedagogical lineages. The influence of Maris brought a specific Dutch sensibility regarding the natural world, while Cormon provided the structural discipline required for figure painting. This duality allowed him to move between landscapes and genre scenes with equal competence. His ability to manipulate oil on canvas allowed for a certain density in his compositions, making even small-scale works feel substantial.
