The Life and Art of Albert Müller
Albert Müller was a Swiss Expressionist painter, glass artist, draftsman, graphic artist, and sculptor. Born in Basel, Switzerland, he began his professional journey by working in his family business before entering the school of crafts in Basel. He graduated as a glass painter from the general business school in Basel in 1917 and completed an apprenticeship at the workshop of Eichin & Straub. During his training, he worked on stained glasses depicting Emperor Heinrich and the Basel Staff.
His travels took him to Munich and Paris, where he was impressed by the stained glass windows of the Chartres Cathedral. Later, Müller traveled to Italy with federal art grants, finding inspiration in the works of the Trecento and Quattrocento while staying in San Gimignano. He also lived in Colderio in the Ticino and Obino.
Professional Milestones and Legacy
In 1924, his design for the stained glass windows of the Gewerbeschule in Basel was elected. Müller was a co-founder of the artist group Rot-Blau, established in Obino alongside Hermann Scherer and Paul Camenisch. His professional life included exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Basel, including a 1923 exhibition on Basel and its environment.
Müller's life was marked by significant connections to other artists, such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Following Müller's sudden death from typhus, his works were deposited in the Fine Art Museum of Basel by his trustees for his children, Kaspar and Judith.
