Beatriz Gomes Dias: Life, Art & Activism

Early Life and Education

Beatriz Gomes Dias was born on March 26, 1971, in Dakar, Senegal. Though born in Africa, her ancestry traces back to Guinea-Bissau. Her parents, including a doctor father, relocated to Lisbon, Portugal when she was four years old, settling in the heart of the capital city. She pursued higher education at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Coimbra, earning an undergraduate degree in Biology. Later, she expanded her academic pursuits with a Master's degree in Science Communication from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Nova University Lisbon.

Career Path: From Biology to Activism & Politics

Following her studies, Beatriz Gomes Dias embarked on a career as a secondary school biology teacher. However, her commitment extended beyond the classroom. She became actively involved in social justice issues early in her university years, joining SOS Racismo in Portugal. This involvement laid the foundation for her future work as an activist and advocate. In 2016, she founded and became president of the Associação de Afrodescendentes (Association of Afro-Descendants), a pivotal organization dedicated to representing and empowering people of African descent in Portugal.

Political Engagement & Advocacy

Beatriz Gomes Dias’s political career began with her involvement in local governance, serving as a councillor in the Lisbon parish council of Arroios from 2013 to 2019 and then as a member of the Lisbon Municipal Assembly from 2018. In 2019, she was elected as a deputy to the Assembly of the Republic, representing the Bloco de Esquerda (Left Bloc). She became one of three women of African and Guinea-Bissau origin to hold this position, alongside Joacine Katar Moreira and Romualda Fernandes. During her time in the assembly, she focused on combating racism and defending the rights of migrant people and their cultures. Although not re-elected in 2022, she continued her political involvement by running for Lisbon City Council in 2021, where she was successfully elected.

Artistic Expression

While primarily known for her activism and political work, Beatriz Gomes Dias also engages in artistic expression. Her artwork often reflects themes of identity, culture, and social justice. A notable piece is “Coat,” a striking digital representation of a 1950s black wool coat. This work showcases her ability to capture texture and form, blending fashion with artistic commentary.

Influences & Artistic Development

Her artistic development appears influenced by her lived experiences as an Afro-descendant woman navigating Portuguese society. Her work is informed by a desire to represent marginalized voices and challenge societal norms. While specific artistic influences are not widely documented, it’s clear that her activism deeply informs her creative output.

Major Achievements & Historical Significance

  • Founding and leading the Associação de Afrodescendentes, a crucial organization for Afro-Portuguese communities.
