A Life of Expressionism and Design
Ewald Dülberg was a German painter, stage designer, director, textile artist, and woodcutter associated with the Expressionism movement. Born in Schwerin, Germany, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and began teaching in 1910. He was a founding member of the Darmstadt Secession, a group established in 1919. His professional journey included roles at the Odenwaldschule in Ober-Hambach and various professorships in graphic arts, weaving, and theater design at the State Art Academy in Kassel and the State Building School in Weimar.
His artistic practice was characterized by a variety of formal languages, including ornamental, calligraphic, abstracting, cubist, and geometrizing accents. He was particularly noted for his expertise in woodcutting, a skill he developed before the First World War. Beyond the canvas, Dülberg designed cubist stage sets and complete production designs for the Hamburg State Theater.
