A Multidisciplinary Visionary
Françoise Sullivan is a Canadian painter, sculptor, dancer, choreographer, and photographer. Born in Montreal, Quebec, she was the youngest child in a middle-class family. Her early interest in the arts was encouraged by her parents through lessons in dance, theatre, and painting. Her formal education included studying classical dance with Gérald Crevier and attending the École des beaux-arts de Montréal. During her studies, her early paintings were influenced by Fauvism and Cubism.
Her artistic journey is marked by a remarkable ability to switch between disciplines. In 1948, she signed the Refus Global manifesto, which included her essay La danse et l'espoir. Her career has spanned various forms of expression, from performing improvised gestural movements in works like Danse dans la neige to creating monumental public sculptures.
Evolution of Form and Medium
Sullivan's exploration of movement and space led her to study modern dance in New York with Franziska Boas, Martha Graham, and Louis Horst. In the late 1950s, she transitioned into sculpture, learning metal welding at the École des arts et métiers in Lachine, Québec, under the guidance of Armand Vaillancourt. She furthered her sculptural studies with Louis Archambault, working with wood, iron, and plaster.
In the 1980s, she returned to painting, producing significant series such as:
- The Cretan Cycle
- Hommages
- Tondos
