His academic journey began at the Karlsruhe Academy, where he studied alongside Georg Scholz and Rudolf Schlichter, before continuing his education under Emil Orlík at the Berlin Museum of Arts and Crafts School. Following his service in the military during the First World War, Hubbuch returned to the Karlsruhe Academy to complete his studies in a master class. His professional trajectory at the academy was significant, moving from an assistant lithography instructor to the head of the drawing department, and eventually being appointed as a professor.

Hubbuch's career faced significant disruption in 1933 when, as a known antifascist, he was dismissed from his teaching position and forbidden to paint by the Nazi authorities. During this period, he supported himself through commercial work, including decorating ceramics and painting clock faces. After the war, he resumed his role as a professor of painting at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, a position he held until 1957. In his later years, his style moved closer to expressionism, and he produced fewer works after 1970 due to failing eyesight.
