A Life Shaped by Art

Born Nicolas Luc-Olivier Merson in Paris, France, the artist entered a world where creativity was part of the family fabric. His father, Charles-Olivier Merson, was a painter and art critic, providing a foundation of artistic observation from his earliest years. This upbringing led him to formal training at the École de Dessin under Gustave Chassevent, followed by studies at the École des Beaux-Arts under Isidore Pils.

His early career was marked by significant milestones that brought him recognition within the French art community. In 1866, he exhibited his first work at the Paris Salon. A few years later, in 1869, he achieved the prestigious Prix de Rome. This award allowed him to spend five years in Italy, a period that deeply influenced his focus on religious and historical subjects.

The Art of Storytelling

Merson possessed a talent for narrative, often using his brush to recount legends and sacred histories. His work frequently drew from the influence of Italian Primitives and Raphael, as well as the British Pre-Raphaelites. Some of his notable paintings include:

  • Le Soldat de Marathon (1869), the work that earned him the Grand Prix de Rome.
  • The Wolf of Agubbio (1877), a piece set in a frozen Italian piazza featuring a haloed wolf.
  • Rest on the Flight into Egypt (1880).
  • Saint François prêchant aux poissons (1886).

Beyond large-scale canvases, he was a skilled illustrator. He produced illustrations for Victor Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris and worked on various decorative commissions. His reach extended to the very small scale of daily life through his designs for postage stamps for the French and Monaco posts, as well as banknote designs for the Bank of France.

A Legacy of Decoration and Design

Merson’s hand was visible in many public and sacred spaces. He contributed to the mosaic in the chancel vault of the Basilica of the Sacré Cœur and created artwork for stained-glass windows, such as those found in the Church of the Holy Trinity Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia. His decorative work also graced the Palais de Justice, the Louis Pasteur Museum, and the Opéra Comique.

Despite his many honors, including being elected to the Académie des beaux-arts in 1892 and receiving the Legion of Honor, Merson was a man of firm convictions. He famously resigned from his position at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1911 to protest changes in the organization of academic studies. He passed away in Paris in 1920, leaving behind a body of work that spanned painting, illustration, and graphic design.
