The Life and Art of Giuseppe Diotti

Francesco Giuseppe Antonio Diotti was an Italian painter of the Neoclassic style. Born in Casalmaggiore, he began his training as an apprentice to Paolo Araldi before studying at the Academy of Fine Arts of Parma under Gaetano Callani. His early career involved small decorating jobs and sign-painting. Later, Diotti arrived in Milan, where he learned from the luminosity and sense of colour found in Emilian fresco painting practiced by Andrea Appiani. In 1804, a scholarship allowed him to study in Rome under Vincenzo Camuccini.

Career and Notable Works

Diotti achieved success through various commissions, including religious, mythological, history paintings, and portraits. He served as the director of the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo starting in 1811. His notable works include:

  • Count Ugolino (1832)
  • Pontida’s Conspiracy (1837)
  • Four frescoes in Cremona Cathedral, including The Ascension and Christ Blessing the Little Children

He also contributed to the decoration of Palazzo Bolzesi and Palazzo Locatelli. Diotti died in Casalmaggiore.
