The Nuremberg Years

Paul Juvenell the Elder began his work under the guidance of a Flemish portraitist and architectural painter. This early training shaped how he approached space and structure. He spent much of his life in Nuremberg, where his hands worked on the very surfaces of the city's important homes. He designed and painted facades and interior decorations that transformed these buildings. His work often involved large-scale decorative ensembles, yet he also found a way to work small.

In Nuremberg, he took on the task of copying and restoring works by Albrecht Dürer. This required a steady hand and a close eye for existing detail. While his larger projects decorated walls and ceilings, he frequently turned to copper plates for more intimate subjects. These small surfaces held religious scenes and mythological themes, often featuring biblical figures set within painted architectural interiors.

Travels and Influences

Before 1613, Juvenell traveled to Italy. This movement through Europe brought him into contact with different ways of seeing the landscape. It is possible he observed the delicate copper landscapes of Adam Elsheimer during this time. Such encounters left marks on his own approach to small-scale painting. He continued to use copper as a primary medium for his religious compositions, maintaining a focus on the precision required by such a surface.

His later years took him away from the familiar streets of Nuremberg. In 1638, he left the city, moving first toward Vienna and eventually reaching Hungary, in what is now Slovakia. This period of movement marked the final chapter of his life, which ended in 1643.

A Family of Painters

The practice of painting was a shared language within his household. The skills he developed were passed down through his children, as his three sons and one daughter all became painters themselves. His legacy lived on through these family connections and the physical marks left on the architecture of Nuremberg.
