In this rigorously structured landscape, Bourdon quoted ancient and contemporary works of classical art: the large statue of a horse at the left directly cites a statue found on Rome’s Quirinal Hill, while the group of dancers at the right comes from Poussin’s Bacchanal (ca. 1632–33; National Gallery, London).
