The Academy and the Caucasus

The story of Adam Międzybłocki begins in Grzybówko, Poland. His early training takes shape at the Vilnius School of Drawing, but the trajectory shifts toward Cracow. Between 1908 and 1913, he enters the Academy of Art, working under the guidance of Teodor Axentowicz and Leon Wyczółkowski. These years in Cracow establish his technical foundation.

Then comes the Great War. The landscape of his life expands far beyond Poland as he lives in the Caucasus. This period of displacement and distance provides a backdrop to his developing eye before he eventually returns to Poland in 1919. He settles briefly in Warsaw, but the pull of the east remains strong.

The Light of Vilnius

By 1922, Międzybłocki is back in Vilnius. The city is a place of reconstruction and memory. He captures the atmosphere of this era through a specific, delicate method. His watercolors of the city are notable for their clarity, blending precise realistic imagery with a lucid minimalism. He documents the square with its observatory tower, catching the setting sun as it hits the treetops and the stone balustrade.

His work during this interwar period achieves a rare level of circulation. His townscapes of Vilnius are published as sets of colored cards, allowing his vision of the city to move through the hands of the Polish community. He focuses on:

Final Years in Gdansk

The movement of history continues to dictate his geography. Following the shifts of the mid-1940s, he moves to Gdansk as a repatriate in late 1945. The artist’s output remains focused on landscapes and portraits, maintaining the technical discipline learned decades earlier in the Academy. His presence in the art scene is marked by exhibitions across several cities, including Lublin, Poznan, and Lvov.

The final chapter of his life concludes in Gdansk. In 1956, the same year he passes away, an individual exhibition of his works is held in the city. His legacy remains tied to the specific light of the places he inhabited, from the mountains of the Caucasus to the streets of Vilnius.
