Early Life, Family and Training

Philip Barlag was born on 7 December 1840 in Christiania. He was the son of schoolteacher Johan Herman B. and Fredrikke Louise Christensen. His early years were shaped by a structured academic path that moved quickly from foundational drawing to specialized instruction. In the spring of 1858, he began studying under David Arnesen, a period that lasted until October 1860. This period of instruction coincided with his enrollment at Den Kongelige Tegneskole in the autumn of 1858, where he initially focused on elementary and plaster classes before moving into Christopher Borchs' freehand class between 1861 and 1863.

His technical development continued through J.F. Eckersbergs malerskole, where he was a student from 1860 to 1864. This training provided the groundwork for his subsequent move to Munich. Between 1864 and 1865, Barlag studied in Munich, opting for private lessons rather than formal enrollment at the art academy. This period of study helped solidify the technical precision that would define his later output. In 1874, he married Gunda Mathilde Kristine Jenssen.

Artistic Focus and Style

Barlag’s early interests leaned toward the depiction of animals, but his career eventually settled into the realm of landscape painting. He moved away from animal studies to focus on the topographical realities of the Norwegian terrain. His work centered on high mountain motifs, fjord scenes, and the specific atmosphere of winter landscapes. These subjects allowed him to explore the varied expressions of the natural world through a lens of strict naturalism.

His approach was defined by a commitment to reliability. He prioritized a meticulous, faithful representation of his surroundings over stylistic innovation or painterly experimentation. This adherence to accuracy ensured his landscapes remained grounded in the physical reality of the scenery he observed. He maintained this conservative approach well into the 20th century, continuing the technical lineage established by J.F. Eckersberg.

The precision of his work is evident in several of his documented subjects:

Patrons and Sales

Barlag’s commercial reach was defined by steady, institutional support rather than speculative frenzy. His ability to produce reliable, naturalistic landscapes secured him a consistent place in the collections of major Norwegian art associations. The Oslo art association was his most significant patron, acquiring 39 paintings between 1862 and 1902. This sustained interest from the capital's collectors provided a stable market for his meticulous depictions of the Norwegian landscape.

The Drammens Kunstforening also played a decisive role in his career, making several key acquisitions that documented his progression. They purchased Motiv fra Sogn in 1867, followed by Landskap fra Valdres in 1870. Their acquisition of En foss in 1880 further solidified his standing within these regional institutions. Beyond these major hubs, the Bergen art association also recognized his work, purchasing 4 paintings for their collection.
