The Artistic Evolution of Raynald Leclerc
Born in Saint-Michel-de-Bellechasse, Canada, Raynald Leclerc is a self-taught painter who grew up along the Saint Lawrence River. His early interest in drawing manifested in his teenage years through ship illustrations sold to visitors. Following studies in architectural drawing at the Cégep de Lévis, he entered the professional art world in November 1984 in Quebec City at the gallery of Lionel Tremblay. His career has included numerous exhibitions across Quebec, such as at Galerie Le Chien D’Or, Île-des-Moulins Art Gallery, and Galerie d’art La Falaise, as well as presentations in Edmonton and France.
Leclerc’s technique has undergone a distinct transformation. His early phase was characterized by precise lines and lightly painted canvases. This evolved into a style defined by impasto and rich texture, achieved through the exclusive use of a palette knife—a tool he has used for over 35 years. Working with pure paint without additives or fillers, he treats light as a material component, emphasizing it through thick application and vivid colors.

The landscapes of his youth and travels frequently inform his subject matter. His works often feature the Saint Lawrence River and the aerial perspectives of Quebec City. Since 2013, stays in Provence have inspired a series of paintings dedicated to that region, with works exhibited at locations such as Domaine Souviou and Galerie Hesbé Bolzonello in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
