Pedestal Table

A Fragmented Composition

The painting Pedestal Table is a collage that presents a seemingly chaotic arrangement of various objects. Within the composition, a vase is positioned in the middle of the collage, surrounded by several pieces of paper. The scene also features a chair located towards the right side of the image, along with numerous books scattered throughout. Some of these books are placed on top of each other, while others lie flat.

The artwork appears to be constructed from a variety of different materials, including metal, cardboard, and paper. The overall arrangement of these elements creates an impression of disarray or chaos, as the objects seem to be piled upon one another.

Materiality and Form

Created in 1913, this work utilizes a variety of textures through its use of different media. The composition is characterized by:

  • The strategic use of a muted palette, primarily featuring browns, whites, and blacks to create solidity.
  • A flattened, almost two-dimensional space that emphasizes geometric abstraction.
  • The incorporation of letters and numbers to disrupt the purely visual experience.
  • An architectural puzzle approach that reveals the underlying structure of form.
