The Life of Casimir Markievicz

Casimir Markievicz was a Polish playwright, theatre director, and painter. Born in the village of Denhofówka, he studied law at the University in Kyiv and studied drawing under the Ukrainian painter Mykola Ivanovych Murashko. In 1895, he transferred to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met and married Jadwiga Splawa-Neyman. Known as Count Markievicz, he was part of a literary circle that included W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, and J.M. Synge. In 1910, he formed the Independent Dramatic Company, staging plays written by himself and starring his wife, Constance.

Artistic and Literary Work

Markievicz's artistic output included portraits, landscapes, and genre painting. His talent was notably applied to large oil portraits of two Polish statesmen: Marshal Piłsudski and Stanisław Wojciechowski. In addition to his visual art, he wrote several plays, such as Seymour's Redemption, The Dilettante, Home Sweet Home, The Memory of the Dead, Mary, and Rival Stars. He also wrote the screenplay for the 1920 Polish film Powrót. Later in life, he was active in Warsaw and worked as a correspondent for British magazines like the Londoner Daily News.
