His early years were marked by a restless movement across the American landscape, driven as much by necessity as by a desire to see new horizons. Before he was known for his brushes, he earned his living in more rugged ways, pearling the rivers o

f Arkansas and later working as a floor finisher in Memphis, Tennessee. These years of manual labor and wandering through riverbanks provided him with a direct, unmediated connection to the natural world that would later define his oil paintings. The arrival of Hohnstedt in New Orleans around 1914 brought a significant shift in his fortunes. It was here that his talent caught the eye of a museum patron who offered him a room on a yacht…
