A life in Leeds and London
The hands of William Robinson first learned the precision of fine detail through the steady work of a clock-dial enameller. Born in Leeds in 1799, his early years were shaped by this meticulous craft before he moved toward the canvas. In 1820, he arrived in London to enter the Royal Academy as a student. It was here that he found himself working within the studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence, absorbing the methods of one of the era's most significant portraitists.
By 1823, the pull of his home region brought him back to Leeds. He established a practice that reached well into the surrounding areas. While London provided his formal training, the North became the place where he built his reputation among local figures and institutions. His life was relatively short, ending in Leeds in August 1839 during his fortieth year.
The brush and the subject
Robinson’s approach to portraiture often relied on a specific duality of touch. He frequently worked on small portraits where the faces were finished with great care, while the rest of the figure was left with light, loose strokes. This technique, reminiscent of Henry Edridge, allowed for a sense of movement within the frame. His ability to balance these textures earned him commissions for large-scale works, such as the full-length portraits held by the United Service Club in London.
His subjects ranged from high-ranking military figures to local professionals. Some of his recorded works include:
A portrait of the Duke of Wellington
John Arbuthnot
Michael Thomas Sadler
Self Portrait
Portrait of the Artist's Son
Legacy in the local landscape
Though his time in the London art scene was a formative chapter, his presence remained deeply felt in the Leeds community. He was more than a painter of notable figures; he was a teacher who provided painting lessons to Branwell Brontë. This connection links his quiet, technical skill to the broader history of the region's cultural development. His works remain scattered in collections such as the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Leeds Museums and Galleries, where the traces of his careful enamel-inspired precision can still be seen.
