A Life in Form and Color

Born in Canada in 1916, Berthe Simard lived a life shaped by the tactile nature of her medium. She was a painter and a sculptor, moving between the fluid possibilities of pigment and the solid presence of three-dimensional form. Her work reflects a quiet dedication to capturing the essence of her subjects, whether they were religious figures or the simple, grounded details of everyday life.

Her hands were as active in the studio as they were in the quiet observation of the world around her. There is a sense of steady purpose in the way she approached her subjects, seeking to find the weight and the light within them. This commitment to her craft allowed her to leave a lasting mark on the Canadian art landscape.

The Breadth of Her Vision

Simard’s artistic output was diverse, spanning different themes and modes of expression. She did not limit herself to a single subject, instead choosing to explore the human condition through various lenses. Her work often touched upon the spiritual and the mundane, finding beauty in both the sacred and the ordinary.

Religious subjects such as Vierge à l'Enfant and Christ en croix
Portraits of youth like L'Écolier
Nature and seasonal studies including Les Sucres

In her 1955 work Les Sucres, she captured a specific sense of place and time. This piece is held in the collection of the Musée Des Beaux, Québec City, serving as a reminder of her ability to translate the atmosphere of her surroundings into a visual language.

Her sculptures and paintings have found their way into significant collections, ensuring that her perspective remains part of the cultural record. She approached her art with a sincerity that required no embellishment, letting the work speak for itself through its form and its presence.
